Our Take

Apple is rejecting your app because it requires external hardware (Bluetooth device, accessory, IoT device, etc.) to function, and Apple's reviewers don't have the hardware available to test the app. Without being able to verify the app's core functionality, Apple cannot approve it. This is one of the more process-heavy rejections because you need to either provide Apple with a way to test without the hardware, or in some cases physically ship a device to their review team. The fastest path is usually creating a demo mode or providing a detailed video showing the full app experience. Common examples include: smart home controllers, fitness device companion apps, medical device apps, Bluetooth peripheral controllers, and industrial IoT dashboards. The key principle is that Apple needs to see your app work -- even if they can't test the hardware integration directly.

Resolution Guide

01

Add a demo/simulation mode

This is the fastest and most reliable path. Create a mode that simulates the connected device experience with realistic sample data. Make it accessible from the pairing screen with a prominent 'Demo Mode' button.

02

Record a comprehensive video

If demo mode isn't feasible, record a video showing every feature of the app with the hardware connected. Upload to YouTube (unlisted) or Vimeo, and include the link in Review Notes. Show: pairing, data sync, all main features, edge cases.

03

Provide detailed review instructions

In Review Notes, explain: what the hardware does, what the app does without it, how to access demo mode, and what specific features to test.

04

Ship hardware to Apple

As a last resort, Apple can receive hardware at their review facility. Contact App Review via the Resolution Center to arrange this. This is slow but sometimes necessary for medical or industrial devices.

05

Ensure the app is usable without hardware

Even if hardware is the primary use case, the app should have some utility without it (viewing historical data, account management, educational content about the device).

Prevention

  • Always include a demo/simulation mode for hardware-dependent apps
  • Include a comprehensive video URL in every submission's Review Notes
  • Design the app to provide some value even when hardware isn't connected

Subject:Guideline 2.1 - App Completeness: App Requires External
Guideline 2.1 - Performance - App Completeness We were unable to review your app because it requires hardware that we do not have access to. Specifically, the app requires a Bluetooth-connected fitness tracker to access the app's core features, and without the device connected, the app displays only a pairing screen. Next Steps: To help us proceed with the review, please provide one of the following: - A demo mode that simulates the connected device experience - A video that demonstrates all app features with the hardware connected - If applicable, arrange to provide the hardware to our review team Please include detailed instructions in the Review Notes field.

    Before & After

    Before — Rejected

App launches to a Bluetooth pairing screen. Without the proprietary fitness band connected, users (and reviewers) cannot access any other screen.

    After — Approved

App shows pairing screen with a 'Try Demo Mode' button at the bottom. Demo mode shows 7 days of simulated fitness data, all charts, goal tracking, and social features. Review Notes include a video URL showing real hardware pairing.

What changed: Apple needs to see your app work. A demo mode with realistic data is the gold standard for hardware-dependent apps.
