Guideline 4.3 - Spam: Duplicate App

High SeverityHard FixTypical Fix: 2-8 days0 Reports
Also known as:App is a duplicate of existing appsApp appears to be created from a templateApp is a repackaged websiteMinimal difference from existing apps

Our Take

Apple believes your app duplicates the content and functionality of other apps currently available on the App Store, or is a template-based app with minimal unique content. Apps that are simply repackaged websites, apps created from commercialized templates, or apps that duplicate another app without adding sufficient value will get rejected.

Resolution Guide

01

If your app is the original, appeal before making changes

Occasionally, app reviewers will accidentally reject the original app instead of the copycat app. If you believe this is true, document your app submission timeline vs. copycat apps and submit an appeal.

02

Audit for unique differentiators

Document all unique features, superior UX elements, or specialized functionality that sets your app apart from competitors. Create a comprehensive list of what makes your app valuable.

03

Enhance unique value proposition

Add substantial new features, improved user experience, or specialized functionality that clearly differentiates your app. Avoid superficial changes like colors or icons.

04

Document your differentiation

Prepare detailed documentation explaining your app's unique value, target audience, and how it differs from existing solutions. Include screenshots highlighting distinctive features.

05

Update app metadata

Revise your app description to clearly communicate unique value and differentiation. Avoid generic language that could apply to any similar app.

06

Submit with explanation

Include a detailed note to the reviewer explaining your app's unique features and value proposition, with specific examples of differentiation.

Prevention

  • Conduct competitive analysis before development to ensure sufficient differentiation
  • Build substantial, unique features rather than relying on templates
  • Focus on solving specific user problems that existing apps don't address well
  • Avoid creating apps that are primarily website wrappers without native functionality

    Subject:Guideline 4.3 - Spam: Duplicate App
Your app duplicates the content and functionality of apps currently submitted to the App Store. Apps that provide duplicate functionality are not useful to users and clutter the App Store. Submitting similar apps may be considered spamming the App Store and could result in removal from the Apple Developer Program.

    Before & After

    Before — Rejected

A simple WebView wrapper around a restaurant website with no native features

    After — Approved

Added native ordering system, push notifications for order status, Apple Pay integration, and offline menu browsing

What changed: Transform a web wrapper into a native experience with features that justify a standalone app
