Guideline 3.1.2
Guideline 3.1.2(a) - Subscriptions: No Ongoing Value Delivered
Our Take
Apple is rejecting your app because it offers an auto-renewable subscription but does not deliver ongoing value that justifies the recurring charge. Apple requires that subscriptions provide continuous or regularly updated content, services, or functionality -- not a one-time unlock disguised as a subscription. This rejection targets apps that use subscriptions to paywall static content that never changes, one-time utility functions (like a file converter), or features that could reasonably be a one-time purchase. Apple's stance is that subscriptions must offer dynamic, evolving value to justify the recurring billing. Common patterns that trigger this: a calculator app with a monthly subscription to access advanced functions, a wallpaper app subscribed for a static pack, or an app that charges monthly for a feature set that never updates. The fastest compliant path is either converting to a non-consumable IAP (one-time purchase) or genuinely adding ongoing value (regular content updates, cloud sync, server-side processing).
Resolution Guide
Assess whether ongoing value genuinely exists
Does your app deliver something new or continuous each billing period? Cloud sync, server processing, regular content drops, and live services all qualify. If the answer is honestly no, you need to restructure.
Convert to one-time IAP
If the feature set is static, replace the subscription with a non-consumable IAP. This is often the fastest path to approval.
Add genuine ongoing value
If you want to keep the subscription model, add real recurring value:
- Cloud sync or storage
- Server-side processing (AI, rendering, etc.)
- Live data feeds or API access
Make the value visible
In your App Store description and in-app subscription screen, clearly articulate what ongoing value subscribers receive. Be specific: 'New templates added weekly' not 'Premium access.'
Document your update cadence
In Review Notes, explain your content update schedule and provide evidence (e.g., changelogs, content pipeline documentation).

Consider Appealing
Appeal if you can demonstrate ongoing value that may not be obvious to the reviewer: server-side processing costs, regular content updates, cloud storage, or AI model improvements. Provide evidence of your update cadence and server-side costs.
Before & After
QR code scanner app charges $3.99/month subscription to unlock the scanning feature, which works identically every month with no updates or additional value
QR scanning offered as a $4.99 one-time purchase (non-consumable IAP); optional $1.99/month subscription adds cloud scan history, cross-device sync, and weekly design template updates
What changed: Static feature unlocks should be one-time purchases. Subscriptions must deliver ongoing, demonstrable value.
